Student political involvement proposal for Supreme Council
July 28, 2010
PETALING JAYA, July 28 — Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said he will propose that university students be allowed to take part in politics in the upcoming council meeting to ensure their active involvement in the field.
Saifuddin, who is also Deputy Higher Education Minister, said although the Universities and University Colleges Act was amended in 2008 to allow students of local public varsities to take part in political associations with permission from the Vice-Chancellor, it still needs to be reviewed again.
“The act should not distance students from politics, but instead include them in decision making processes,” he said at a news conference to announce 10 finalists for the Fourth Junior Chamber International (JCI) Creative Young Entrepreneur Award, here today.
He said this when asked to comment on the government permitting graduate education service officers (teachers) on grades DG41 to DG48 to engage in politics starting August. (more…)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — The government likes to boast that Malaysia has almost erased poverty. It is the one unchallenged success that is shouted out again and again to show how far we have come since Merdeka.
The line is familiar: “In 1970, 49.7 per cent of households were living in poverty. Now it is only 3.8 per cent.” Or out of 6.2 million households, only 228,400 can be classified as poor.
These 228,400 are households that earn an average of RM800 a month and below.
Is RM800 a fair cut-off point? Because it effectively means that if a household of four earns RM900, RM1,000, or even RM1,500 a month, they cannot be considered poor.
If that is the case, then why are there more and more media reports of families complaining that they cannot make ends meet even when they earn RM2,000? (more…)

JULY 16 — Malaysians today woke up to higher prices for fuel and sugar which the government called a “subsidy rationalisation” that will not burden the people but still reduce government expenditure.
Of course, the government is right. Five sen extra for a litre of fuel would also cost RM3 more for a 60-litre fuel tank. And sugar will only cost 50 sen more for every two kilogrammes. Bernama also reported that it will mean an extra 1.25 sen for a cup of teh tarik.
Nothing to get excited about. Except that the Najib administration only finally issued a statement late last night after rumours had swirled for almost the entire day of impending price hikes. (more…)

PUTRAJAYA, July 14 — The National Fatwa Council has approved the Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ) leadership training subject to certain conditions, contradicting the Federal Territories Mufti’s June 10 “fatwa” or religious edict banning the course.
National Fatwa Council chairman Tan Sri Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said their decision was made in a muzakarah last June 16, after research from a panel set up by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) and explanation from the company, which was founded by Indonesian cleric and motivator Ary Ginanjar Agustian.
“The ESQ leadership training can be conducted in Malaysia with full supervision by the Syariah panel appointed by the ESQ,” Abdul Shukor told reporters today.
“This is because the muzakarah is satisfied that most of the elements of doubt in the ESQ leadership training course can be rectified,” he added.
Abdul Shukor stressed that the company’s syariah panel was responsible to monitor the contents of the ESQ training course and to report any future contradictions against Islamic teachings. (more…)
