Seditious Remark Claim: Zahid To Seek Clarification From Azhar

BAGAN DATOH, May 7 (Bernama) — Penang Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will ask for clarification from Penaga assemblyman Datuk Azhar Ibrahim for allegedly making seditious remarks at the state assembly sitting on Thursday.

“I have not received feedback from him (Azhar) on the matter, but I will be seeing him at the state Umno Liaison Committee meeting tomorrow,” he said after simultaneously opening the annual meetings of 67 Umno branches in the Bagan Datoh division, here Friday.

Ahmad Zahid said Azhar’s alleged controversial statement would also be discussed at Friday’s meeting.

However, he hoped Azhar’s remarks would not be misconstrued by any quarters as they could have been taken out of context.

It was said that at the state assembly sitting, Azhar had warned that there would be a repeat of the May 13 riots if the people lost confidence in the police and that the army could take over from the police if the latter did not enjoy public support.

“I will also speak to all the 11 Barisan Nasional assemblymen to get a detailed report on the issue,” said Ahmad Zahid.

The controversial statement by Azhar, who is also Penang opposition leader, has been criticised, especially by Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen, as they feel it could threaten racial harmony in the country.

Asked about the attitude of non-Malay voters who seemed to be asking for various projects during a by-election, Ahmad Zahid said this was common during the elections when federal and state government leaders came to campaign and usually the requests would be approved.

He said from the by-election result analyses, certain groups were not supportive of the BN government but only wanted the projects.

Therefore, he said, the approach that should be taken by the federal and state governments was to approve projects according to urgency and not be fooled by those with their own agenda.
