Pudu…going…going…gone! — Neville Spykerman

JUNE 22 — England has its Tower of London, San Francisco its Alcatraz, Australia it Melbourne Gaol and even Vietnam has its Hanoi Hilton.
These historical landmarks which once housed the infamous or prisoners of war today draw tourists and more importantly tourist dollars. They are recognised as part of the country’s heritage and rightly preserved. But not here at home.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Awang Adek Hussin yesterday told Parliament that the government has decided that the 115-year Pudu Prison was not “something to be proud of” and should not be turned into heritage site.
Instead the iconic prison is coming down to make way for another mall the country does not need and residential development which will be beyond what most Malaysians can afford.
Next week the lunatics who run the asylum may want to relocate Parliament but wait… that was announced last week!
